Kumi Sakai

Kumi Sakai is a Japanese artist based in London with an MA in Graphic Communication Design from Central Saint Martins.

She explores how contemporary capitalist society measures value through efficiency and profit, often overlooking love, empathy, and the interconnectedness between humans and the more-than-human world.

For Kumi, reflecting on this loss of emotional and relational awareness becomes a way to explore how we might coexist amid contradiction and conflict. Her practice is informed by Heraclitus’s philosophy, which assumes the conflict between opposites is the basis of all existence.

She uses fictional narrative structures to reveal how social systems and human perspectives are shaped and perceived. Through art books and concrete poetry prints, her work examines the relationship between language and materiality, crossing the boundaries between reading and seeing, and between reality and imagination.
